Xavier Prep clips Perry in 5 sets for 2nd time
October 18, 2017 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Top-ranked Xavier Prep's volleyball team was forced to scratch and claw its way back to defeat No. 5 Perry a month ago in five sets. The Gators dropped the first two sets and won the next three - the decisive set, 15-13.

It was a little different five-set affair Wednesday night as the teams alternated wins the first four sets before Xavier produced as its coach knows it can in the fifth to down Perry, 26-24, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-9 in a 6A contest at Xavier's Activity Center.

"It took a village to win this match," Xavier coach Lamar-Renee Bryant said. "We struggled at times, but the last set we had it together. We passed it better, served it tougher. We were in system the whole set."

Xavier officially clinched the Premier Region crown, improving its overall record to 33-3, its power-ranking mark to 15-0 and its region record to 6-0. Perry, which was fresh off a huge out-of-state tournament triumph in California last weekend, dropped to 31-6, 10-4 prm and 3-3 in region.

Perry forced the fifth set after eeking out the fourth -- a set that neither team led by more than two save the final score. Senior outside Ryann Davis and senior middle Kennedy Kaminsky combined for nine kills in the set.

The bit of momentum Perry gained by winning the fourth was tested quickly in the fifth. Xavier opened with an ace and Davis followed with a hitting error. But a few sideouts later the match was even at 5 with Perry scoring a point helped by a kick save and ultimately a Davis kill. That was the final tie of the evening.

Xavier's Ashley Young sent a serve down the left baseline that was ruled in much to the dismay of the Perry faithful. That began a decisive 7-1 run and opening a 12-6 lead. Two kills by senior Lanie Wagner, a block from senior Ericka Snopka and an ace by Trinity Cavanaugh were the notable plays. The match ended much the way it began with Xavier sophomore outside Briana McKnight on fire. McKnight had nine kills in the opening set and tallied the match's final three points with the same.

Xavier's attack -- both teams for that matter - was varied. The Gators were led by McKnight with 19 kills and outside Lanie Wagner with 16 kills and 14 digs. Balancing out the offense were middle Snopka (9 kills), sophomore middle Jasmine Knight (7 kills) and freshman outside Serena Turner (7 kills). Feeding the attackers was junior setter Shannon Shields (47 assists). Senior libero Alyna Draper had 17 digs.

Perry's top attackers for the season lived up to their stats. Davis led with 18 kills and senior outside Lexi Keith added 10 kills .Junior middle Grace Doyle ws quite effective turning in nine kills and seven blocks.

Perry wins HUDL SOCAL championship
October 14, 2017

Gilbert (AZ) Perry, a Chandler Unified School District member, won the 72-team Hudl SoCal Invitational over the weekend in San Diego.

Perry, who was the tournament #4 seed, went 2-1 in pool-play on Friday def. San Diego University City & San Clemente in two sets. Perry lost to Temecula (CA) Chaparral in three sets. Due to a tie-breaker, Perry won the pool.

On Saturday, Perry def. #11 Sun Valley (CA) Village Christian in two sets (25-15, 25-7) in the crossover match and earned a spot the Hudl Bracket, which was the highest-level bracket.

In the quarterfinals, Perry def. #14 La Jolla (CA) Bishop's in three sets (22-25, 25-18, 15-11). In the semifinals, Perry beat the #1 seed, Temecula Valley (CA) in two sets, 25-16, 25-15. TV is ranked #10 in the country according to MaxPreps.

In the final, Perry def. #3 San Diego (CA) Canyon Crest Academy, 2-0 (25-18, 25-19), to claim the tournament championship.

This is the second tournament championship this season for the squad led by fifth-year Head Coach, Fred Mann. The Pumas won the title in September's WolfHowl Invitational hosted by Chandler HS. It was the third consecutive title for Perry in that event. Later that month, Perry was a semifinalists in the Westwood HS Tournament of Champions.

Perry is the second Arizona school to win the HudlSoCal Invitational in three years. Desert Vista won in 2015.

Alexis Keith was named MVP. She's committed to Eastern Washington. Halle Razo (New Mexico State), Kennedy Kaminsky (Eastern Washington), and Ryann Davis (NAU) were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Each is a senior.

Perry returns to Premier Region action on Wednesday at Xavier College Prep in Phoenix. The team then hosts Tucson High on Thursday.

Perry threepeats at House of Payne Invite
September 9, 2017 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Perry's girls volleyball team had to work harder this year to claim a third consecutive championship at the annual House of Payne Invite.

The unbeaten Pumas had to rally from a set down in each of the Gold Division semifinals and final, but walked away with another trophy on Saturday afternoon by downing Horizon, 20-25, 25-17, 15-6 at Coy C. Payne Gymnasium on the campus of Chandler High.

"I was glad to see we didn't lose our composure in those matches," Perry coach Fred Mann said. "We came out and picked up our game both times."

Perry (12-0), which beat Mountain Pointe in 2015 in the final and Salpointe in last year's final, won eight matches in the two-day tournament that began Friday. The Pumas lost one set in their first six tournament matches prior to qualifying for the Gold semis. Salpointe put Perry's feet to the fire winning the first set of the semis, 25-21, but the fear of losing seemed a steadying influence as the Pumas took the next two sets 25-18, 15-10 before duplicating the feat in the title match.

Perry senior hitter Ryann Davis and senior middle Kennedy Kaminsky were selected to the all-tournament team. Davis was named tourney most valuable player.

"I know they were picked for the all-tournament team, but I wish Lexi (Alexis Keith) had been on that team," Mann said. "She was our best player this weekend. She really swings it, and had a great tournament."

Keith, also a senior, registered a match-high 14 kills in the final with Davis adding nine. Kaminsky led in blocks with four, senior Katie Koski in assists (24) and senior Halle Razo in digs with 18.

Horizon (8-4) was unbeaten in the tournament prior to the final match with seven wins and didn't lose a set in those seven. The runner-up finish was pleasing to coach Valorie McKenzie, who is seeing her team grow despite a slow power-ranking match start. Horizon entered the tournament 1-3 in power-ranking matches, including a four-set loss to Perry on Thursday.

"The first two weeks have been rough, but we are making a lot of improvement," McKenzie said. "This tournament helped us.  We reboot and go from here. Perry really just picked it up the last two sets. We tried everything, but there was nothing we could do once they got rolling."

Jozlyn Byers led Horizon with seven kills and Karen Scanlon added six kills in the title match. Rounding out the all-tournament team were Scanlon, Salpointe's Alex Parkhurst, Mesa High's Annie Hatch, Valley Christian's Courtney Dyer and Highland's Rylie Arms.
