Perry drops semifinal match to Corona del Sol
#2 Xavier turned in a sweep of #3 Hamilton, 25-21, 26-24, 25-16 while Corona battle back from a 2-0 deficit to stun #1 Perry 18=25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-7 in the conference semifinals at Highland High School. Corona and Xavier meet on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

Perry gets #1 Seed for State
6A State Qualifying - (16-team bracket): In order to qualify, a school must have scheduled a minimum of 14 games. Teams ranked No. 1 through No. 8 will earn an automatic bid to the state tournament. The conference play-in tournament will match up teams ranked No. 9 through No. 24. Teams ranked No. 1 through No. 8, along with the eight winning teams from the conference play-in tournament, will make up the 16-team state tournament.

The state tournament bracket will be seeded according to overall ranking of the 16 teams. The state tournament will consist of four rounds and be single elimination.

Perry has hot hand as state begins

The 6A state tournament gets underway Tuesday with first-round matches at the sites of high seeds. Quarterfinals are set for Thursday at the sites of high seeds. Semifinals are Monday Nov. 5 at Highland High and the title match is Wednesday Nov. 7 at Wells Fargo Arena. The top eight seeds host first round matches.

No school seeded better than No. 5 has won state at the big school level this decade. The No. 1 seed has prevailed five times out of eight. A capsule look at the top seed:

#1 Perry sports an overall record of 30-3-1 and has gone unbeaten in its last 19 matches. Perry won the Premier Region title with an 8-0 record with two sweeps of Xavier, Hamilton and Basha, three of the other five top-five teams in the tournament. The Pumas are deep. They have an array of offensive weapons and an outstanding block led by senior Grace Doyle.

The addition at midseason of Mesquite transfer Jenna Heller has added to depth at the setter position. Perry finished second to Hamilton in Westwood's Tournament of Champions in mid-September. Doyle is one of the leaders in kills (202) and far and away the leader in blocks (118). Tatum Stall, Brooklyn Poling and Sian Richardson have filled the attack void nicely in lieu of graduates from the 2017 campaign. Perry opens state with No. 16 Westwood.

Perry posts 7-0-1 mark in winning Birdcage Classic

Perry girls volleyball coach Fred Mann likes to maintain a balance in his team's matches over the course of a season. A little here, a little there. Endeavoring not to overdue it or be idle for too long.

Such it was this weekend at Chaparral High's Birdcage Classic for the Pumas. An eight-team field featuring three No. 1 ranked teams, including Perry in 6A, and four of the other five in the top 10 of their respective conferences.

Perry earned the top seed for Saturday's bracket play after a 3-0-1 Friday. The Pumas seemed at their best in the title match as they bested Cactus Shadows, 25-9, 25-13. Perry is 15-0-1 in its last 16 matches.

"We're finishing up fall break and had a couple matches last week," Mann said. "We had no matches this week. I didn't want to go a week without a match. So we got in this tournament. I like to have us get a little rhythm before we play the tough matches we have left (Xavier Prep, Hamilton and Chandler)."

Perry dodged a glitch in its bid to win the tournament in its opening match of bracket play. The Pumas lost their first set to Pinnacle 25-12 and were able to pull out a 26-24 win in the second. They took the third 15-10 and didn't lose a set the rest of the day.`

In Saturday's final with Cactus Shadows, it was my goodness, Grace Doyle. The senior middle registered four kills in four attempts and six blocks in the two-set win over Cactus Shadows. She has been a difference maker often of late.

"It's big to have five blocks in a match," Mann said. "We we played Xavier (Sept. 26) she had five blocks in the fifth set. She's not a person that draws attention to herself. I can't say enough how much she does for us."

Junior outside hitter Tatum Stall led the title-match attack for Perry with nine kills. Perry excelled from the service line as well with Melissa Blockey and Matea Suan supplying a pair of aces each.

Cactus Shadows reached the final coming back through the loser's bracket. The Falcons avenged a sweep by Scottsdale Christian in the second round of bracket play by returning the favor to get a second chance at Perry from Friday's play.  Scottsdale Christian, the defending 2A state champs, finished 5-3 in the tournament. Two of those losses were to Perry.

Xavier Prep’s spell over Gilbert Perry on the volleyball court is gone.

The Gators, who defeated the Pumas in three five-set marathons a year ago, including the 6A Conference semifinals, got a bit of payback in a five-set triumph on Wednesday night (Sept. 26) at the Activity Center.

Defending state champion Xavier looked strong out of the gate, coasting to a 25-14 win, but things began to unravel after that. Perry won the next two, 25-18 and 26-24. Xavier sent it to a fifth game with a 25-19 win, but Perry got the last laugh with a 15-9 win to decide it.

Xavier (18-5) led in the early stages of Game 2, but Perry (16-3) rallied to take the lead and established itself. The Pumas finished the game with five straight points.

Game 3 went back and forth, but Xavier walked more of a tightrope – its mistakes seemed more magnified. With the score tied at 24, Perry scored on a kill, and Xavier handed the Pumas the victory with a return that sailed beyond the back line.

Perry led most of Game 4 before Xavier was able to turn things around. A Xavier block evened the score at 18, and the Gators went on to win it on a couple of kills by Jasmine Knight, the last one landing in the back corner.

In the decisive Game 5, Perry jumped to a 5-1 lead and Xavier could not recover. Perry claimed the win with the help of its defense on a couple of blocks among its final three points.

Xavier won’t have much time to reflect on the outcome because it has its third match in as many nights on Thursday (Sept. 27) with a road meeting with Chandler Basha.

Gators coach Lamar-Renee Bryant hopes her players can regain some of their mental strength.

“We didn’t show up tonight,’’ she said after the Perry contest. “You can’t get behind by as many points as we did. We got nervous. We have to look to get better, because we are going to see them again (Oct. 16 at Perry).’’

Part of the players’ mindset should include increased aggressiveness.

“You’ve got to want to have the ball come to you so you can make a play,’’ Bryant said. “Some of our players didn’t want that.’’

Xavier and Perry were 1-2 in Arizona Interscholastic power points ratings entering the match, and now they have switched spots.

Perry serves up sweep of Mountain Pointe

Perhaps Perry girls volleyball coach Fred Mann could feel Mountain Pointe's pain after the Pumas swept the Pride Wednesday evening on the Pumas home floor, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-7.

Perry sprung back into action Tuesday night with a road trip to Sandra Day O'Connor and returned with a 3-1 defeat -- its first and only power-ranking loss in now seven matches.

"I don't know if we had the energy (Tuesday) after the tournament last weekend," Mann said, a tournament his team finished second to Hamilton in. "O'Connor is really good. We didn't have it. Tonight was different. We served really well. That started everything."

Mountain Pointe played in the same tournament - the Westwood Tournament of Champions - and after a .500 Friday in the invite rebounded to win four of its five matches on Saturday to finish 6-3 in the tourney. The Pride followed up Tuesday resuming power-ranking matches with a sweep of Highland at home.

The match with Perry, however, gradually got away from Mountain Pointe after a close first set. The second set Perry's blocking , led by middle Grace Doyle, thwarted much of Mountain Pointe's attack. And the serving Perry brought to the court completed what was a demolition in the third set. Perry improved to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in power ranking matches. Mountain Pointe is 10-6 overall, 5-4 in prm. Perry collected 12 aces in the match, seven in the third set.

"Grace is a stud," Mann said of the 6-2 senior. "She did a nice job the whole match and in the second set we had multiple blocks."

Leading Perry in the stat department was outside hitter Sian Richardson with 13 kills and outside Tatum Stall eight kills. Doyle posted five blocks, libero Matea Suan 16 digs and Madison Beasley four aces. Beasley served 10 consecutive points taking a 6-2 lead to 16-2 in the third set.

Mountain Pointe was led on the attack by Piper Manross with six kills and Jahara Campbell with five. Perry plays again Thursday hosting Chaparral while Mountain Pointe takes Thursday off and prepares for the Nike TOC on Friday and Saturday at ASU and the Kroc Center in Phoenix.

Perry Continues Undefeated Streak With Win Over Queen Creek

The Perry girls volleyball squad posted its fourth consecutive win Tuesday night in a dual match against the Queen Creek Bulldogs.

In the first game, Perry played with ease to win 25-16. The Pumas took the next two 25-11 and 25-15.

No. 9 senior outside hitter Brooklyn Poling started the match off strong with multiple kills to get the ball rolling in the first game. Perry also showcased its strengths after each dig by the back row and seamless sets by senior captain Madison Beasley.

No. 8 junior outside hitter Sian Richardson shined throughout every set, drilling several key shots. After making very few unforced errors to record the victory, Richardson was named the Player of the Match. In the third game, Richardson consecutively aced her serves which ensured the win for the Pumas.

“We did an excellent job at serving and getting them out of system. They have two hitters we can’t stop if they get a good set," said head coach Fred Mann. “The key to a match is trying to get them out of their system and heading into the next match I’d still like to see us work on our defense some more.”

Leading the team in total blocks, No. 11 senior middle blocker Megan Schulte challenged the Bulldogs by her strong force at the net.

While Perry mainly has a lineup filled with juniors and seniors, Queen Creek had to rely on younger players to fill their roster.

No. 5 setter Jaden Drollinger is only a sophomore but leads her team in both serving aces and assists. Drollinger’s effort stood out among her teammates as she hustled all over the court to get to the ball for a good set.

While the Bulldogs fought hard, they ultimately came up short against a stronger, more experienced team.

“We’ve had a rough couple of weeks, playing three matches per week for the last two weeks, so I think some of the girls are just tired,” said head coach Erica Crismon. “Overall, we need to be more disciplined on defense. Our block just kind of bails out really quickly, and in 6A with all these big hitters we can’t leave an outside hitter one-on-one.”

“I think next time the girls need to communicate and give a little more work ethic,” said assistant coach Turner Beall. “Skill can only take you so far, but work ethic and drive can take you to a lot of places.”
